The restoration of buildings constructed with Menorcan limestone

Accelerating weathering of the stonework of an 18th century building in Mahó n, Menorca, has given cause for concern. The nature and causes of the deterioration of the limestone were studied by X-ray diffraction, partial chemical analysis, differential thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy. In the light of the results the following recommendations could be made with some confidence: replacement of most affected blocks by the more resistant dolomite; replacement of less deteriorated limestone by a tinted mortar; and the provision of a sacrificial coating of a lime wash.
