The phenomenon of gas outbursts from the floor of excavations in the East Midlands Coalfield is examined and their general features are described.

An attempt is made to correlate the distinct grouping of the fractures and their uniform directional tendency with the known geological features of the area. A series of underground investigations allied to laboratory work and surveys of previous literature indicate that the general structural geology of the area controls the occurrence of the fractures.
