Secretary, Association of Engineering Geologists, (London U.K. Section).
Sir,
Following the publication of the Report by the Geological Society's Engineering Group Working Party on "The preparation of maps and plans in terms of Engineering Geology", the Association of Engineering Geologists (London U.K. Section) met on 4th June 1973 to discuss this document. A Forum discussion was held chaired by Mr. R. J. G. Edwards. Forum lead speakers were Mr. C. R. Cratchley, Mr. M. W. Morgans, Mr. I. E. Higginbottom, and Mr. A. P. Humphreys. Messrs. D. Brunsden, Carter, J. C. Doornkamp, J. N. Hutchinson, J. L. Knill, J. W. Norman, D. G. Price, G. E. Rawlings, and E. J. Wilson contributed to the general discussion.
Mr. C. R. Cratchley commenced the discussion by outlining the possible applications of engineering geological maps in planning, as a guide to the design of subsequent site investigations and the application of such plans in the recording of more detailed information on specific engineering projects. The extent to which engineering design information should be included on maps was questioned with regard to the amount of basic data included and its representability. The use of a computer and data bank in the retrieval of site investigation data was discussed. It was suggested that some of the value of the report lay in drawing attention to some of the problems of producing engineering geological maps and plans, and as such should not be regarded as a standard, but more as a guide to possible future developments.
Mr. M. W. Morgans, having stressed the need
