The International Conference and Field Trip on Landslides (ICFL) was founded to provide an environment for scientists, engineers and planners to meet in the field to discuss and exchange ideas on landslides. A short conference is normally held at the end of each trip to provide a forum for participants to present research results. The 9th ICFL was held in southern Britain in September 1999 and this book provides a record of the field workshop and one-day conference, edited by the convenors of the event.
The book comprises some 16 chapters. The first provides a summary of the field workshop that, over ten days visited the Isle of Wight, Dorset coast, South Wales and Cotswold Hills. A short overview with key references for landslides in these areas is presented. Given the emphasis on the field workshop, perhaps consideration should be given to future ICFL proceedings containing more information on the sites visited that could act as a guide for others following in their footsteps. This would greatly increase the appeal of the publication and its useful shelf life.
The remaining chapters are given over to the Conference papers from delegates of ten countries on a variety of landslide topics in Australasia (4 papers), Europe (7), the Americas (4) and Middle East (1). Given the relatively small, (but select!) number of participants, it is not surprising that there are no common themes to the papers. The reader is left to dip into an eclectic mixture of recent research that ranges from
