The preface states that the success of the previous two editions of this publication has encouraged the authors to carry out an updating, primarily to update the references, in particular those concerned with European standards. I was curious to see just how significant these revisions were since the 2nd edition was a substantial revision on the 1st edition and it is only eight years since the 2nd edition was published.

In terms of appearance the 3rd edition has the same number of pages as the 2nd edition. There are minor formatting and font changes. It is still hard bound and now contains an attractive green cover. The quality of the photographs, still black and white, were slightly less clear than my predecessor.

There are possibly two main questions to beanswered:

  1. If one does not have a copy should one buy one now?
  2. If one already has a copy is it necessary to get the latest edition?

The answer to the first question is undoubtedly in the affirmative. The publication's success speaks for itself. It is the most comprehensive account written of the technology of aggregate occurrence, investigation, extraction and processing, testing, classification, standards and end-uses.
