Martin is the British Geological Survey's Chief Engineering Geologist and he manages the BGS's Urban Geoscience and Geological Hazards Programme. Previously, he managed the Survey's Coastal and Engineering Geology Group, and the Engineering Geology and Geophysics Group. He has been involved in engineering geological research and consultancy, environmental and engineering geological mapping, geo-hazard assessment and site investigation for over thirty years. During this time he has spent a number of years overseas in Asia, Africa, Europe and Central America.
He has been a project team member, project leader and programme manager on a large number of projects in the UK and overseas. Many of these projects involved geohazard assessment. These include:
