Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments (CL:AIRE) website (www.claire.co.uk) describes the organization as being an independent not-for-profit organisation established in 1999 to stimulate the regeneration of contaminated land in the UK by raising awareness of, and confidence in, practical and sustainable remediation technologies....one of the leading organisations within contaminated land, fulfilling a need for objective, scientifically robust appraisals of remediation technologies and effective methods for monitoring and investigating sites. Our unique Technology and Research Group (TRG) draws on some of the foremost professionals and academics within the field to provide credible, third party appraisals of remediation technologies.
Since 1999 CL:AIRE has established an enviable reputation within the UK contaminated land industry for producing and disseminating high quality and useful information through print, seminars and its website.
The most recent CL:AIRE Research Project Report describes research on the natural attenuation of petroleum hydrocarbons and the petrol additive MTBE in the Chalk aquifer of southern England. The report describes a contaminated fieldsite in St Albans and an investigation to determine the extent and behaviour of BTEX and MTBE contamination in the underlying aquifer. High-quality monitoring and analysis, including use of multi-level samplers, tracer tests, microcosms to determine aquifer MTBE/BTEX biodegradation potential, and Chalk fracture-matrix investigations have been used to develop a more comprehensive conceptual model of the behaviour of MTBE and BTEX in the Chalk at this research site.
The report presents the reader with clear details on the site characterisation, data interpretation, and development of improved conceptual and process
