The new pocket sized edition of this book made a very absorbing read at home, on a flight and whilst delayed on a train due to floods. It more than covers the stated objective of offering a practical, hands on guide to field methods in hydrogeology.
This new edition has the welcome addition of sections on drilling and borehole geophysics. It has good and well illustrated case histories, and much of the text has been revised to bring it up to date.
The book is written in a simple and almost naïve style, which means that the book has clarity and can be easily digested by its target readership (graduate and undergraduate earth science students) AND by new and experienced practicing professionals.
As a fellow consultant with too many years in the trade to count, I cannot think of anywhere else to find, with such ease, a lot of little facts ranging from weir formulae to the daily water requirements of farm animals. Even tucked away at the end in the Appendices there are little nuggets or gems about health and safety, and conversion factors between commonly used units.
I recommend this book not just to its target readership, but to all of us who have ever had to explain what we do at the village meeting right up to giving an evidential account at Inquiry.
